Like an ecosystem, capitalism relies on a network of interdependence. Butte's early wealth was the central engine that churned industries across the state. The mines' supportive infrastructure provided the means for the fur trade and burgeoning cattle and farming industries to flourish. Coming to understand this deepened my research into 1800s Montana and provided a framework for my book project.
